The Gershwin Prize is awarded to a composer or performer for his or her lifetime contributions to popular music. The ceremony to honor Willie was held at the Library of Congress on November 18th, to a very affluent crowd.
Along with his own performances of new music and old, Willie shared the stage with Cindi Lauper, Neil Young, Raul Malo, Ana Gabriel, Paul Simon, Alison Krauss, Rosanne Cash, and Leon Bridges. The night was obviously star-studded and included some epic performances that will surely go down in history.
The night will be aired on PBS on January 15th, but for now, watch this performance of Willie and his sons Lucas and Micah singing “Living in the Promiseland.” Given the current state of decision making in regards to refugees, this song spoke loudly on the issue and received a standing ovation from the bi-partisan audience.
