Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Charles Kelley‘s “The Driver” is the debut single from his forthcoming solo six-song EP, which is expected to be released early next year.
This exciting new track penned by Kelley, Eric Paslay, and Abe Stoklasa explores an edgy, raw sound that pushes the Lady A singer’s vocals into a previously unheard lower range. Singers Dierks Bentley and Eric Paslay also leave their mark on the lyrics.
“The perspective seemed like a Crosby, Stills, and Nash story song,” Kelley notes of the lyrics. “We went in the studio to record it with no agenda. I thought maybe it’ll be the start of the next Lady Antebellum record, maybe we’ll scrap it, maybe I’ll pitch the song to other singers.”
Don’t fret fans, Charles Kelley is not leaving his career with Lady Antebellum in the dust.
“Having Hillary and Dave’s support means a lot to me,” adds Kelley. “We love each other and we’re having a blast. This was just a pure musical detour, to take myself out of my own head and off the treadmill for a minute. I hope and think it can bring in a fresh perspective when we go back in to make the next Lady Antebellum record.”
Now that the single has been made public, complete details on Kelley’s solo tour will be announced soon.
The vocalist told The Boot about his desire to play much smaller venues, “We [Lady Antebellum] never got to do the full club tour, which is always a dream of mine. I know that sounds silly. Of course my dream was always arenas and amphitheaters, but there’s something about playing in a dirty club: people grabbing on your legs, you can smell the beer in the air, you can see everybody’s faces. That was my goal.”
We’re excited to see Kelley blaze a new path in his musical career with “The Driver” leading the charge and look forward to what 2016 will bring for this artist!
