If you come to a Eric Church concert more than once, expect a different experience every time.
Eric Church prides himself on thinking on his feet as a touring artist. He has yet to play the exact same set of songs at any of his shows so far on The Outsiders World Tour.
Eric encourages his fans to write down the titles of their favorite songs from his back catalog on posters and bring them to the show. Some of those fans are requesting songs Eric and his band haven’t played in five or six years.
Eric tells The Oklahoman, “The most fun is grabbing that sign and turning around and seeing the band members shaking their head ‘no’ and the other half going, ‘you know, lets try it.’”
Eric admits they usually mess up playing the unrehearsed song, but it provides an off-the-cuff moment for his concert crowds.
“I think that goes back to that’s a unique experience for that show, for that crowd,” Eric explains.
“They can say, ‘Hey, that was the show that he messed up that one number [on] the sign.’”
“I love that stuff because it just sets it apart from the same thing every night, and I think a lot of times when you have big shows and you’re playing for a bunch of people, it becomes very, very hard for it not to be more of an act than a show. It’s just kind of like what you do every night, and ‘here’s where they play this and here’s where you play that.’ Now, some of that is unavoidable … but it’s (about) finding those moments that you can change up.”
