Eric Church wants his fans to know his new song "Talladega" is about more than race cars.

NASCAR and country music goes hand in hand. When you see the title “Talladega” you might assume that the song is about the famous cars that race around the iconic track. You would only be partly right with Eric Church‘s new song.

The tune is about the fans that go to these races and their experience.

Eric tells Billboard Magazine, “It was a thing where a group of your buddies go take stuff, tents, camp out, stay a few days, walk back and forth to the track.” He adds, “I can’t tell you who won the race, but I could tell you all the experiences we had in a two- or three-day period.”

Church also told Billboard Magazine about the day he wrote the song with Nashville songwriter Luke Laird  when they were on the road a couple years ago. They were sitting on the tour bus in upstate New York in 2012 and watching a race at Daytona International Speedway. That gave Church an idea.

“What you see on TV there has nothing to do really with racing,” he explained. “It’s about that experience, whatever that is — the experience with the person next to you and knowing that that’s probably a finite time in your life. It’s not gonna last forever.”

“Talladega” is the fourth release from the album The Outsiders (February 11, 2014)
