Ryman Auditorium got a fun surprise during Marty Stuart’s Late Night Jam, when country rebel Eric Church and Traveller singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton joined Little Big Town members Phillip Sweet and Karen Fairchild for a spirited cover of “Girl Crush.”
The Chief certainly put his softer side on display when he strummed the opening lines and began to sing the sultry song, which sparked an uproar of controversy a few months back over alleged “support of the gay agenda.” Malarkey. The 6/8 waltz ballad is hauntingly beautiful and touts some of the smartest lyrics we’ve seen in country music lately.
We love seeing this more mellow side of Eric Church. His own song “Like a Wrecking Ball” is in the same vein— sexy, sexy, sexy. Yeah, we’d like to order up some more of these smooth tunes.
